Zypan Review by Dr. Bell: Digestive Enzymes & HCl Support
Zypan by Standard Process supports digestion with betaine HCl, pepsin, and pancreatin. Dr. Bell reviews benefits, dosing, side effects, and who it helps.
Zypan is one of the most asked-about products in my practice. People come in with bloating, burping, heaviness after meals, or that "the food just sits there" feeling. Often the problem is not the food. It is that the stomach has stopped making enough acid and enzymes to break it down. That is where Zypan comes in.
Zypan is a digestive aid from Standard Process. It combines three things your stomach and small intestine make on their own when working well: hydrochloric acid (in the form of betaine HCl), pepsin, and pancreatin. Taken with a meal, it gives your gut a hand with the heavy lifting of digestion.
What is in Zypan
The label looks simple, but each ingredient does a different job:
- Betaine hydrochloride. A form of hydrochloric acid that releases in the stomach. Helps break down protein and signals the rest of the digestive system to fire up.
- Pepsin. An enzyme that works in an acidic stomach. It chops protein into smaller pieces so the small intestine can finish the job.
- Pancreatin. A blend of three enzymes (protease, amylase, lipase) made from pork pancreas. These work in the small intestine on protein, starch, and fat.
- Ammonium chloride. A small amount that helps maintain the acid environment.
That combination covers the full meal. Acid and pepsin handle the stomach phase. Pancreatin picks up where they leave off.
Who tends to do well on Zypan
Zypan is not for everyone. The people I see do best on it look like this:
- They feel full or heavy long after a meal
- They burp a lot, or the burps taste like the food they ate hours ago
- They have trouble digesting protein (meat, eggs, beans sit like a brick)
- They are over 50 and stomach acid has dropped naturally with age
- They have been on long-term acid blockers and want to support digestion as they wean off (with their doctor's guidance)
- They get a lot of bloating from healthy foods that "should not" cause bloating
People often confuse low stomach acid with high stomach acid because the symptoms can look similar. If acid blockers have not solved the problem, low acid is often the real issue.
Who should not take Zypan
Skip Zypan, or use it only with a healthcare provider's guidance, if any of these apply:
- You have an active stomach ulcer or have had one recently
- You have gastritis or any kind of stomach lining inflammation
- You are on blood thinners or NSAIDs (the acid can irritate the stomach lining)
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- You avoid pork-derived ingredients (Zypan contains pancreatin from pork)
How to take it
The label suggests 2 tablets with each meal. In clinic, I usually have people start with 1 tablet per meal for the first three days to see how their stomach reacts. If it feels fine, move up to 2 per meal. Some people need 3 with a heavy meal and 1 with a light one.
Take it during the meal, not before or after. Mid-meal is best. The HCl needs food in the stomach to work on. Taking it on an empty stomach can sting.
If you feel a warm or burning sensation in the stomach within 15 to 30 minutes of taking it, that is a sign you do not need it. Stop, and talk with your provider before trying again.
Side effects
Most people tolerate Zypan well. The most common side effects are:
- A warm or burning feeling in the stomach. Usually means the dose is too high or you do not need extra acid.
- Nausea. Rare. Often goes away if you cut the dose in half.
- Slight loose stool. The pancreatin can speed digestion. Usually settles within a few days.
What I see in practice
Zypan is one of those products that, when it fits, fits well. Patients who have struggled for years with bloating, fullness, or "I just cannot eat much" stories often feel a real difference within the first few meals. They eat the same food and just feel better afterward.
Zypan does not fix everything. If your gut symptoms come from food sensitivities, an infection, or a structural issue, more acid will not solve it. But for the simple "my digestion is just slow" picture, it is one of the most useful products on my shelf.

Can I take Zypan with other supplements? Usually yes. Zypan can pair with Standard Process Multizyme, Cholacol (for fat digestion), or specific PMG extracts. Avoid taking iron supplements at the same meal because the extra acid can affect iron absorption.
Will Zypan replace my acid reflux medication? Not on its own. Many cases of "acid reflux" are actually from low stomach acid, not high. But weaning off prescription acid blockers should always happen with your doctor's guidance.
How long does Zypan stay in your system? The enzymes work for the duration of one meal, then are broken down and cleared. There is no buildup. You take it meal by meal as needed.
Can children take Zypan? Not without a practitioner's guidance. The dose is sized for adults and the HCl is strong for a child's stomach.
Bottom line
Zypan is a focused digestive aid for people whose stomach and pancreas could use the help. It is not a fix-all, but for the right person it makes a real difference within days. Start low, take it with food, and stop if it burns. If it fits your case, it can be a long-term tool to keep around.
Always check with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement, especially if you have a digestive condition or take medication.
